How to make isometric paper
- Choose lines or dots. Triangle lines draw a full isometric grid at 30°, 90° and 150°. Iso dots print just the corners of the triangles.
- Pick the spacing. Choose the triangle side: 5 mm, 1/4 in, 10 mm, 1/2 in or a custom size.
- Set paper, colour and weight. Choose Letter, A4 or Legal, orientation and margin, and a light line colour so your drawing stands out.
- Download or print. Download the isometric paper PDF, or print it at 100% scale.
Isometric spacing
| Triangle side | Millimetres | Column width | Triangle area |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 mm | 5 mm | 4.33 mm | 10.83 mm² |
| 1/4 in | 6.35 mm | 5.5 mm | 17.46 mm² |
| 10 mm | 10 mm | 8.66 mm | 43.3 mm² |
| 1/2 in | 12.7 mm | 11 mm | 69.84 mm² |
Column width is the horizontal distance between vertical lines: side × √3 ÷ 2.
How to draw a cube on isometric paper
Pick a point and draw a vertical edge along a vertical line. From the top and bottom of that edge, draw lines up-left and up-right along the 30° lines. Close the top face with two more 30° lines, then drop vertical edges from the outer corners. Shade the three faces in different tones to make the cube pop. For flat diagrams use graph paper or dot grid paper.
Frequently asked questions
What is isometric paper?
Isometric paper is printed with a grid of equilateral triangles: lines run vertically and at 30 degrees either side of horizontal. It lets you draw 3D objects, such as cubes and buildings, without perspective.
What is isometric graph paper used for?
It is used for technical and engineering sketches, product and game design, level maps, architecture concepts, maths lessons on 3D shapes and drawing with interlocking cubes.
What is iso dot paper?
Iso dot paper shows only the corner points of the isometric triangle grid. It is lighter on the page and still lets you connect dots into 3D shapes.
What spacing should isometric paper have?
5 mm or 1/4 inch triangles suit most sketches. Use 10 mm or 1/2 inch for children, classroom cube drawings or bigger diagrams.
Are the angles on this isometric paper exact?
Yes. Lines are drawn mathematically at 30, 90 and 150 degrees and the PDF is vector, so the triangles are exactly equilateral when printed at 100% scale.
